Case study

Feedstock contract for greenfield biomass plant

Complication:

Sourcing >200k tonnes of virgin biomass for greenfield biomass plant in area of UK with little or no demand for biomass in 20+ years.

Solution:

Biomass supply contract with leading aggregator and biomass supplier, ensuring incentives and basis for “awakening” dormant supply.

What we did:

Business development:

  • Visit to site area and adjacent regions to interview farmers and land owners that could supply virgin biomass
  • Understanding historic sourcing methodology
  • Understanding how the various biomass fractions were to be sourced, and where applicable mixed, and would align to design criteria for biomass boiler

Commercial aspects
Negotiating term sheet and biomass supply contract, incl.:

  • Ensuring assessment of logistical aspect towards local traffic regulation
  • Ensuring input for log storage
  • Designing contractual mechanisms for breach of tolerances for chlorine and other harmful substances
